Thanksgiving is about spending time with the people you love, not spending a lot of money on pre-made decorations. You can celebrate the spirit of the holiday by engaging the entire family in some fun decorating projects.

Start with an outdoor walk. This will give your kids a chance to run and play while collecting items found in nature. See who can find the most unusual seed pods, pine cones and autumn leaves. Next, take a family outing to a local farmer’s market and select produce that can be used to create holiday decorations.

Kids of all ages can experiment with placing apples, gourds, greenery and walnuts in bowls and baskets. Incorporate the “treasures” from your walk and place the arrangements around the house. Flank a basket with candlesticks and you’ll have a special centerpiece.

Older kids can create one-of-a-kind cornucopias using silver and gold acrylic paints purchased from craft stores. Paint miniature corn cobs, cattails and gourds with stripes, swirls and dots. Dried leaves and baskets can be painted with spray-paint. Your older children can also cover the items with a decoupage medium and then sprinkle them with glitter. The medium will dry clear, creating sparkly centerpieces. Seeing your children’s efforts will give you even more to be thankful for this year.

Happy Thanksgiving!
